My Counselling Approach

I believe that therapy offers a space where you can slow down and begin to make sense of what is happening for you.
Sometimes we come to counselling because something is happening in the present -  anxiety, relationship difficulties, stress, loss or a feeling of being stuck. At other times, we may sense that something deeper is going on, perhaps connected to experiences from our past or patterns that seem to repeat themselves.

As an Integrative Therapist, I don't believe that one approach fits everyone. I draw from Psychodynamic, Person-Centred and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches, adapting the way we work to you, your circumstances and what you need from therapy.

My Psychodynamic training means that we can work with your unconscious processes and explore how past experiences can influence the way we think, feel, behave and relate to ourselves and others today. Together, we can gently explore patterns, beliefs, emotions and ways of coping that may have developed over time.

At other times, it can be helpful to focus more on what is happening in your life right now. CBT can offer practical ways of understanding the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviours, while a Person-Centred approach provides the warmth, empathy and acceptance that can help you feel safe enough to explore things honestly.

I don't see myself as the expert on you or your life - you are. My role is to listen carefully, ask thoughtful questions, offer reflections and sometimes gently challenge you when I feel it may be helpful.

I aim to create a therapeutic space that is warm, respectful, confidential and free from judgement. We can start wherever you are and take things at a pace that feels manageable for you. Therapy isn't about changing who you are. It can be about understanding yourself more deeply, developing greater self-compassion, recognising what you need and discovering different ways of responding to life's challenges.
